The Bruins started off strong in their season opener facing off against the Cambridge

Valkyries to begin the year. Pitcher Kirstie Wright zoned in early on the mound getting all three outs by strikeout in the first inning conceding no runs allowing just one hit which was the only hit of the game for Cambridge. Sheffield responded at the plate in the bottom half of the inning drawing walks and recording multiple base hits. Confusion on the base paths led to the end of the inning with a close call at home plate, Bruins totalling four runs and never giving up the lead from there.

Kirstie continued where she left off on the mound recording another two strikeouts and also recording an assist on a 1-3 putout on a hard grounder to the mound. The bottom half of the inning saw the bats come alive again, Center Fielder Elizabeth Bramley started the team off with a base hit to left field before coming round to score later in the inning. First Basewoman Kelly Wright cleared the bases driving in 2 runs on an RBI Double before the inning end, Sheffield adding another 3 to their total.

The third inning was very much a defensive showcase, Kirstie adding yet another two strikeouts only allowing a walk with no runs scored to this point. The bottom half, Valkyries pitcher had settled in and the Bruins went down in order 1-2-3 all via groundouts to the third basewoman.

Cambridge Valkyries fought hard in the fourth, managing to get on the scoresheet avoiding the shutout only for Kirstie to once again strikeout the side taking her total up to 10Ks for the game.

As the old saying goes, “patience is a virtue”, the Bruins started the first inning drawing 4 base on balls with Shortstop Hannah Coe working the count deep before getting an RBI on a bases loaded walk and Second Basewoman Charlotte Kerry finishing the inning off with an RBI single on a hard line drive up the middle to center field, Sheffield scoring the maximum 5 runs total in an inning as per league rules.

The Mayhem responded by scoring 3 quick runs and loading the bases before some quick thinking by Catcher Caitlin Walsh, Pitcher Kelly Wright and Third Basewoman Emily Sprague that led to a 2-1-5 Double Play, Kelly securing the tag at home plate after a wild pitch before throwing over to third base and Emily getting the tag down on another runner trying to advance. After the excitement of the double play, Kelly returned to the mound before recording her first career strikeout to end the inning limiting the damage to just the three runs.

The Bruins managed to level the scores in the top half of the third but it wasn’t to be, the London Mayhem added another 4 in the bottom half of the inning taking their tally to 12 runs. Sheffield tried to fight back but could only manage an additional run as the time limit expired handing the Bruins their first loss on the season and finishing the day with a record of 1-1
