Sheffield Bruins Baseball Club

27 May 2024

Bruins dominate in the season opener of the Women's Baseball League, defeating Norwich Iceni Queens and Leicester Diamonds.

Saturday was the season opener for the 2024 Women's Baseball League, with Sheffield Bruins hosting 3 of the other 7 teams; Belles Baseball, Leicester Diamonds and Norwich Iceni Queens.

The first game for the Bruins was against the newly formed Iceni Queens. The Bruins got off to a flying start scoring the maximum 5 runs in the first inning. The bottom of the inning saw Wendy Taylor pitching, holding the Iceni Queens to 2 runs. The Bruins continued to dominate scoring the maximum 5 runs throughout the game until the last inning (open innning) where the team scored 6 runs. Lhiez de la Paz came in to relief pitch from the 3rd inning, giving up 1 run and lead the Bruins to a 21-3 win over the Iceni Queens.

Game 2 saw the Bruins face Leicester Diamonds. Joyce Lam started on the mound for the Bruins, dominating in the first 2 innings, not allowing the Diamonds to get on the board. Meanwhile, the Bruins continued their form racking up the maximum number of runs in the first inning, followed by at least 3 runs in every inning thereafter. The Diamonds managed to claw back a couple of runs towards the end of the game, but their efforts were not enough for the Bruins, with the game ending 17-3 to Sheffield.

Dora Lau and Antonia Ferguson were star performers, each recording eight runs throughout the day.
